Tyre Glossary #1: What is a Radial Tyre?

Since 1888, when John Boyd Dunlop laid the foundations of the modern tyre by hammering nails into the tent cloth and filling it with air, which he designed for his son's tricycle, the primary goal of manufacturers has been to produce safe and durable tyres.

In 1946, Michelin invented the radial tyre by creating a body structure consisting of steel wires running perpendicularly from one bead to the other.

Structure of Radial Tyre

You can easily recognize radial tyres, which are produced by placing the cord layer, which forms the skeleton of the tyre, on the ground perpendicularly during rotation and by placing these threads at a 90-degree right angle, by the letter R in their product names.
